painting older homes requires a different approach.

Your home may have layers of old coatings, detailed timberwork and surfaces repaired many times over. The quality of your finish depends on what happens before the first coat goes on.

We assess the existing surfaces, identify the preparation required and take the time to work carefully around the original features that give the property its character.

Typical Sydney prices · fully prepared work

  • Federation or period exterior$15,000–$24,000+
  • Bedroom, walls and ceiling$900–$1,600

Final prices depend on size, preparation and access.

Sydney homes we work with.

Every older property is different. We plan the work around the age, condition, materials and original details of each home.

  • Federation homes
  • Victorian terraces
  • Californian bungalows
  • Workers’ cottages
  • Period apartments
  • Character homes

original details deserve care.

The fretwork, the cornices, the ceiling roses: these are what make your home special. We prepare and paint every feature carefully, so it stays part of your home’s character instead of disappearing under the paint.

preparation comes first.

Older painted surfaces can reveal years of wear, previous repairs and multiple layers of coatings. Before painting begins, we assess the condition of the surface and complete the preparation required to create a sound foundation for the new finish.

Depending on the property, this may include cleaning, scraping, sanding, filling, patching, repairing minor surface imperfections and priming before painting begins.

Painter preparing period timberwork

restoring the character, not changing it.

Your period home does not need to look old-fashioned. You can refresh its existing colours, highlight traditional details or choose a new palette, and your home’s architecture stays the star.

inside matters too.

Period features continue throughout many Sydney homes. Interior painting can refresh the space while preserving the architectural details that make the property distinctive, from decorative ceilings and timberwork to doors, trims and original mouldings.

questions.

Do you charge for quotes?

No. Quotes are free and there is no obligation to go ahead.

How quickly will you get back to me?

We reply within 1 business day. Sending a few photos with your enquiry helps us quote faster.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Next Coat is fully licensed (NSW licence 450329C) and holds $20 million public liability insurance for residential and commercial work.

How soon can we use the room after painting?

Most rooms can be used again the same day. Interior paint is usually dry to touch within an hour, with a second coat applied a few hours later. We recommend waiting until the next day before pushing furniture against the walls or hanging pictures. Paint takes about a week to fully cure, so avoid washing or scrubbing the walls during that time.

Which paint brands do you use?

As a Dulux Accredited Painter, we use premium Dulux and Taubmans paints, chosen to suit each surface, from washable interior finishes to exterior systems made for Sydney sun and salt air.

Can you help me choose colours?

Yes. We can talk you through colour options that suit the light, the architecture and the way you use each space, so you can commit with confidence.

Do you test for lead paint?

Older homes, particularly those built before 1970, may have lead-based paint. If we suspect lead paint, we arrange testing before any sanding or scraping begins, and talk you through the safest way forward.

What happens if I am not happy with something?

We walk through the finished job with you and fix anything you point out before we hand over.

Can you get my property ready for sale?

Yes. We refresh homes before they go to market, with repairs, colour updates and repaints planned around your campaign dates.
