how to compare painting quotes.

You have three quotes and three very different prices. Here is how to compare them properly, so you choose the best painter and not just the cheapest number.

the short answer.

  • Compare what is included, not only the total.
  • A good quote lists rooms, surfaces, preparation, coats, paint and licence details.
  • Very low prices usually mean skipped preparation.
  • Ask who does the work, and who you call if something isn’t right.

why quotes vary so much.

Two painters can look at the same house and quote thousands of dollars apart. It’s rarely because one is greedy.

  • Preparation: one quote may include filling, sanding and priming. Another may not.
  • Paint: premium paint costs more than builders grade paint, and goes further.
  • Coats: two coats are standard. Some quotes assume one.
  • Who does the work: your own licensed team, or subcontractors you never meet.

Our painting cost guide shows typical Sydney prices so you know what to expect.

The preparation

What repairs, sanding, cleaning and priming are included.

The paint

The brand, product and finish, and how many coats.

The details

Start date, how long it will take, and who is on site.

The credentials

Licence number and insurance, so you can check them.

The terms

The total price, GST and when payments are due.

red flags to watch for.

  • No licence number on the quote.
  • A price that is far lower than every other quote.
  • A vague line such as paint house, with no detail.
  • Pressure to decide on the spot, or only a rough price over the phone.
  • No insurance, or no clear answer when you ask.
  • Nothing in writing.

questions to ask every painter.

  1. Are you licensed and insured? Can I see the details?
  2. What preparation is included?
  3. Which paint and finish will you use, and how many coats?
  4. Who will be on site, and who is in charge of the job?
  5. How long will it take, and when can you start?
  6. What happens if I am not happy with something?
  7. Is there a warranty on the work?

You can check a NSW licence for free using the NSW Government licence check.

common questions.

How many quotes should I get?

Two or three is plenty. More than that rarely adds anything. Compare what is included before you compare prices.

Should I choose the cheapest painter?

Rarely. A very low price usually means less preparation, thinner coats or cheaper paint, and it shows within a couple of years.

Do I have to pay for a quote?

Not with us. Our quotes are free, and you do not have to go ahead.

Is a deposit normal?

It depends on the job. Ask what any deposit covers and when the remaining payments are due, and make sure it is all in writing.

Why do you need to see the house?

Preparation is the biggest variable, and you cannot price it from a photo. Seeing the walls lets us give you a price that will not change later.
